If you've started learning SEO, you've probably seen people talk about their "DR". So, what is Domain Rating? In one sentence: it's a score from 0 to 100 that shows how strong a website's backlink profile is.

This guide explains it in plain English, with no jargon you don't need.

What is Domain Rating? The one-minute version

  • Made by: Ahrefs, one of the biggest SEO tool companies
  • Scale: 0 (no links) to 100 (the strongest sites on the web)
  • Measures: how many websites link to yours, and how strong those websites are
  • Doesn't measure: traffic, content quality, or how well you rank

Think of it like a reputation score built from recommendations. Every website that links to you is a recommendation. A recommendation from a famous, trusted site counts far more than one from a site nobody knows.

A backlink is a link from another website to yours. If a blog writes "check out this tool" and links to your site, that's a backlink.

Search engines have treated links as votes since the early days of Google. More votes from good websites usually means a site is trusted, which is why backlinks are still one of the most important parts of SEO.

Domain Rating simply turns your backlinks into one easy number, so you can compare websites quickly.

How to read a DR score

Because the scale is logarithmic, each step up is harder than the last. Going from DR 10 to 20 is fairly easy; going from 70 to 80 can take years.

DRWhat it usually means
0–9New site, few or no links yet
10–29Early traction: some real links
30–49A solid, growing site
50–69Well known in its niche
70–89Big brands and publishers
90–100The giants: Google, YouTube, Wikipedia

Why people care about DR

1. Comparing competitors. If the sites ranking for your keyword have DR 20–30 and you have DR 25, you can compete. If they're all DR 80, you'll need a different keyword or a lot of patience.

2. Judging link opportunities. Before you write a guest post or submit to a directory, checking its DR tells you roughly how much the link is worth.

3. Tracking progress. If your DR goes up over months, your link building is working. If it drops, you've probably lost some links.

What Domain Rating is not

It's important to know DR's limits:

  • Google doesn't use it. DR is Ahrefs' own metric, not part of Google's algorithm.
  • It isn't traffic. A high-DR site can still get very few visitors.
  • It ignores relevance. A link from a cooking blog counts the same as one from a site in your niche.

So use DR as a quick, useful signal, not as the only number you watch.

The short version

Domain Rating is Ahrefs' 0–100 score for how strong a website's backlinks are. Higher means more and better sites link to it. It's great for comparing sites and tracking progress, but it isn't a Google ranking factor, so use it alongside traffic and rankings, not instead of them.
