What is domain age?
Domain age is the time since a domain name was first registered. We read the registration date directly from the official registry for the domain’s extension, using RDAP, the modern replacement for WHOIS, so it’s the same data registrars use.
If a domain expired and someone registered it again, the age starts over from the new registration date. Moving a domain to another registrar doesn’t change its age.
Does domain age matter for SEO?
Google has said age by itself isn’t a ranking factor. But older domains usually rank better for a simple reason: they’ve had years to earn backlinks, mentions and trust. That’s exactly what Domain Rating measures, so look at age and DR together.
- Buying a domain? Check its age and DR, and make sure it wasn’t dropped and re-registered recently.
- Checking a competitor? Age shows how long they’ve been building authority.
- Vetting a site for a link? A very new domain with a high DR deserves a closer look.
Domain Age Checker FAQ
How do you find a domain’s age?
We read the registration date straight from the official registry of the domain’s extension (RDAP, the modern replacement for WHOIS) and count the time since then.
Does domain age help SEO?
Age on its own is not a ranking factor. Older domains often rank better because they have had more time to earn backlinks and trust, which is what Domain Rating measures.
Why is the registration date newer than I expected?
If a domain expired and was registered again, the registry shows the new registration date. Transfers between registrars do not reset it.
Is this domain age checker free?
Yes. Check as many domains as you like, no sign-up needed.
